9/1/13- Daily Prompt: Sundae upon Sunday

“It was a Sunday morning…” (after Sharon Olds)

Well, the first time around it was a Friday morning. Just the same, it was a morning for Sundaes, chocolate Sundaes. No, not just chocolate, that would merely imply…these were better. These were chocolate fudge, gooey, with nuts on top, there was a cherry. These Sundaes were better than good. None of the servers said this, of course, that this was better than good. But there were advertisements that said something to the effect that: “Simply Greats is Simply Good!” There was nothing simple about this shop. This was the first time I had been here but I was already impressed. I hadn’t even had ice cream for several years so I guess this was either a big buildup or a big giant let down. The kids, the class said I wouldn’t be disappointed. When a junior High School girl raves on about ice cream like, that you know it has got to be something special. This ice cream, the girl asked, “Do you want a cherry?” She gave us each 2, I guess she was “screaming, hoping” for a big tip.  There were a couple of different types of ice cream. And the ice cream, there were only a couple of scoops, after all, I knew that my sundae was gonna be huge so I just ordered a small. But, even my small was humongous! There were three girls behind the counter and they were, it looked like they were scooping for their lives. They no doubt done had done this more than thrice. They were pretty handy with those scooper things. But, according to these girls a small meant a heaping jumbo mound. The smalls were not small. I wanted to give mine to one of the kids, but I figured that, well, so I just ended up tossing some of it. What can I say? I am just not a great ice cream fan. No, actually I am. At least I am now. After the kids took me out on the little excursion, I learned to love the stuff.  I love it. If I were to have one obsession, it would have something to do with ice cream. I don’t know how many times I have gone back there or also to just have a good treat. I don’t usually tear though my food anyhow but little Jane, she had ordered a medium, that day. She ripped through that like there was no tomorrow. She was finished and I was sitting there looking. She was just eyeing the other brands of ice cream and some of the other sixth graders who were along on the trip. She sorta was one of my favorites and she knew it, too. I guess I also liked it because I was “the favorite teacher on the trip.” There was this older Woman, a geometry teacher who came along. The school needed to give some hours to this teacher and they didn’t necessarily want to give her a few days of paid vacation. They put her in for this plus a few other hours. It is the way this system works, go figure. I went over to her, to Janey, and said, “Okay, Janey, just this once.” I went over to the little server girl behind the counter and said, “I think the young lady with the Red Sox cap needs another medium sundae. A medium please, hot fudge and the works. Get her what she needs, maybe heavy on the jimmies.” In retrospect, I sort of wished I hadn’t done that. That was crossing that teacher-student boundary. But, she looked like she was so needy! I really didn’t think that it was gonna hurt any. Maybe it wouldn’t do. I guess we’ll never really know. Or rather I hope we’ll never really know.  As for the tip? Well, a piece of great advice would probably have been worth more. But, I insisted and the kids managed to scare up a few bucks, actually more than I had expected. Somehow, they scraped together $7.35. The rest, sugar, or candy, or anything that would rot one’s teeth right out of their heads.  If their parents ever knew that I was rotting their little heads, I would be looking for another job.
